WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN TRUMP’S BUDGET OUTLINE: President Donald Trump this week plans to send his first budget request to Congress, a slimmed-down version of the full 2018 funding proposal the administration will release later this spring. The so-called “skinny budget” will likely offer new insights into some of the administration’s education priorities for the coming years — and might show which education programs are on the chopping block as Trump seeks to slash non-defense domestic spending. Here’s what we’re watching for:

— Cuts? The Education Department would not be spared from the overall $54 billion that the Trump administration has said it wants to reduce from domestic programs. And Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has said she’s looking for areas of the department to cut. But just how drastic could those cuts wind up being? Some education budget observers are looking to the Heritage Foundation’s budget blueprint for clues about what the Trump administration might propose. The Heritage proposal calls for a 10 percent reduction to the department’s formula-funded grant programs.
